I started out in the auto industry in the mid 70s or what we now call the good old days. I was working for the largest GM dealership in Alaska and one of the largest in the country. This was when GM was GM! I started out washing cars (or busting suds as we use to say). I eventually moved up and became a corporate trainer for the SOUTHEAST Automotive group. One thing I noticed over the years was the deterioration of customer service in the automotive industry. My first boss was a thirty year company man that was customer driven and he constantly reminded us that without a customer we would all be unemployed!

I drank the kool-aid, I believed him. But as the years passed, I noticed that the customer started to become more of a statistic on a graph in a conference room where strategies for up-selling and getting more out of each transaction at the point of sale was the goal. At the same time we were cutting back on quality and service! “Higher profits” – less service became the mantra. Don’t misunderstand me, I believe in profit. But I believe what my good friend and mentor Dr. Ken Blanchard has said about it; “Profit is the applause we get for taking care of our customers…

In recent months thing have began to stabilize a little more than the last twelve months. In what was being called the automotive crisis many people lost jobs as almost no cars were being sold. Household names Like GM, Ford, and Chrysler all looked to the government for help. A big reason that the crisis took place was because the automotive industry was weakened by a substantial increase in the prices of automotive fuels. With virtually no fuel efficient models to offer consumers the “Big three” of the American automotive industry watched their sales quickly decrease.

While car companies from other parts of the world had been focusing on making cars targeted at fuel efficiency for many years, most American automobile manufacturers were way behind and therefore suffered the largest loss in sales during the global financial downturn. Hope full the mistakes made by these companies served as a lesson in economic to these companies. Sadly, from the looks of the cars that they are still producing they haven’t.

GM is 101 years old, but even its stature as one of the giants of US car manufacturing hasn’t saved it from major problems. Problems caused in part by the economic crisis which is affecting all parts of industry and services in all parts of the globe. And problems caused by GM’s slowness to react to the fact that the world is now demanding smaller, greener cars, even in the US. It is losses of $81bn made over the past four years which have gotten GM to the stage it’s now at. Although the US government will pump billions of dollars in to it, there are many who think it’s a step too far, and the car firm should have been allowed to go under.

In the UK, Vauxhall, part of GM, along with other European GM owned car companies, are understood to be being taken over by a Canadian components company to save it. Governments around the world have come up with various initiatives to help save the car industry. In the UK, the recent ‘scrappage scheme’ has meant that so far in just a few weeks over 35,000 people with cars over ten years old have upgraded to a new motor vehicle. The deal means that the customer gets £2,000 for his old car, regardless of its condition. £1,000 of which is paid for by the government (ie the taxpayer), and the other £1,000 comes from the motor industry itself.

It must be a good move. It means that new cars are less polluting, which is good for the environment, taking old cars off the road. The new cars are also more likely to be safer too because of all the improvements to car safety made over the years. All in all, the scrappage deal is good for everyone, most of all for the motorist, and the car firms. Whether it will be enough by itself to save the UK’s motor plants will just have to be seen over time.

The sport compact industry has been around for some time now, starting back with cars like the Toyota Celica and the Acura Integra. Most of us never really noticed it or at least realized how big it was going to become.

Before not to long ago if you wanted to build a hot rod the question was are you a Chevy man, a Ford guy or a Mopar lover. But in this day and age, with gas prices at an all time high and unsurpassed technology, you have to ask yourself, “Import or domestic?” And today all the big manufacturers have at least one good choice for a performance build. Alot of those choices being compact cars!

Don’t get me wrong there are still muscle cars available on the market, it seems now more then ever. With Chevy introducing the 2010 Camaro and Dodge with the all new Challenger, the muscle car industry is alive and kicking. Some of us are cubic inch fans, where all we care about is how much motor we can fit under the hood.

But at the same time with the Chevy Cobalt SS with the supercharged Ecotec which can easily be modified in to a 500hp race engine or the Dodge Neon SRT-4 we definitely have the choice. Unlike before if you wanted to build a sport compact your choices where very limited. It was pretty much an Acura Integra, Honda Civic or a Nissan 240sx. This is all because of the noise the sport compact industry has made, and the attention it has received from it.

With the sport compact industry growing the amount it has over the last 5 to 6 years it’s obvious why the domestic car companies have jumped in on the action. Which brings us a new challenge, finding the performance parts we are looking for to build the sport compact of our choice. For example when trying to buy a header for a 2004 Chevy Cavalier, it was impossible to just walk in to my local hot rod store or car parts store and find it on the shelf. Ordering online was pretty much the only option. Of course every city is different and we can be sure there are stores out there to find the part you’re looking for. Also I’ve personally noticed import performance parts are a little easier to find.

So as you can imagine the webstores that sell sport compact performance parts are popping up constantly. But a good mechanic isn’t always the best website designer! Rush hour news began in the large cities like New York, Los Angeles and Miami to aid motorists during their commute.
